The Love Yourself Event at Tabula Rasa

22 Feb

store

Just before Valentine’s Day I collaborated on an event with one of the best boutiques in the east end, Tabula Rasa.  The “Love Yourself Event” featured my jewellery line Hibou and I was there customizing necklaces on the spot while TR was debuting some of the their new must-have spring pieces.  Here are some pics from the night!

Here I am in my favourite shirt that I hand-shredded while watching too many episodes of my ultimate guilty pleasure, Star Trek: TNG. What am I looking at? Probably the delicious vegan cupcakes that are just in front of me.

One of the customizable Hibou pieces is the Mojo Bag.  Pick a stone that speaks to you, choose your re-purposed leather swatch, we prepare it, and you walk away feeling the positive vibes!

OOTD – How to Wear Crazy Pants

7 Aug

So here I am looking relatively normal, getting ready in the elevator for this week’s outfit post.  EXCEPT…I am rocking some pretty crazy pants here, pants that everyone openly stared at when I was walking down the street.  Let them stare!

Now that I have completed the marathon that is fashion school, I like to joke that I have earned the right to wear whatever I please in the name of fashion.  The truth is that I have always worn whatever I felt good in and I’ve been wanting to wear these gaudy pants for a while now, but wasn’t sure what I wanted to wear on top.  I went the easy route (it WAS a long weekend, after all) and went with the classic black t-shirt.   You can pretty much never go wrong in a black t-shirt, regardless of what you’re wearing on the bottom.   Tons of jewellery later and we have an outfit folks!

Various necklaces and bracelets – I made them!

Shirt – Old Navy

Pants – F21+

Shoes – Ardene cheapos from last summer

Clutch – Thrifted

Lastly, Ron insisted that I include this picture I took of myself because he thought it was hilarious…here it is in all it’s glory!

Hope everyone had a great long weekend!

OOTD Summertime Velvet

30 Jul

This weekend Ron and I kicked off our week-long concert marathon by seeing The XX at The Phoenix. They set the tone pre-show by filling up the theater with what seemed like record-breaking amounts of dry ice and gothic lighting. So feeling inspired in the midst of a pastel/floral/neon/sunshine-y summer, I busted out my black velvet skirt and my moon print tank from my first Ursa Major collection.

As always, piled on the jewellery like there’s no tomorrow. The necklace is vintage chain and crystal from the last Hibou Accessories collection that I did and the rest I’ve accumulated over my years of fashion hoarding.

Used to be more self-conscious about showing my whole back but now I just say “fuck it, this is my body right now and it’s awesome” and wear the shit out of see-through, low cut things. There’s not enough time in my life for hate!

I love these shoes! They were stupid cheap at Value Village and even though they destroy my feet, they are so legit 80’s. Outfit details:

Sunglasses/Glasses (stolen from my true love) – Zenni Optical
Tank – Ursa Major
Skirt – Thrifted
Shoes – Thrifted
Jewellery – Hibou Accessories & various
Nail Polish – OPI Charged up Cherry & Maybelline Porcelain Party

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer!

Final Collection Sneak Peek

18 Jun

For my final collection at school (I’m all done now, woot!) I decided to create a collection of plus-size loungewear that could transition into a babe’s everyday closet.  I used an 18 as my sample size and created this mood board which drew from a lot of pagan influences and my personal style icon, Kate Bush.

It was interesting to see how few and far between the resources are out there for emerging plus-size designers.  My partner created amazing croquis for me that more represented the bodies I want to dress and I ran from there.  Check out a few sneak peek shots from my final presentation at school (I got an A+!) and I’ll be doing a proper shoot soon.

I found this vintage moon fabric at Value Village and immediately knew it would be the base for my little collection.  I couldn’t love it more and I’ve been wearing this cape like crazy!

So that’s it for now, but I am already working on some new pieces that I can’t wait to share with you fine people (neon and black mesh, anyone?).

OOTD – Holiday Bliss

4 Jul

Had a lovely Canada Day with the mister this weekend, doing completely relaxing things.  It’s very difficult for me to take it easy; I’m always working on something – even when I’m watching the most ridiculous of vapid television shows which I try to watch to turn the ol’ grey matter off.  So it was nice to be able to run around, eat sushi, take pictures and act like an idiot with the soul mate.  It was fantastic.

It was ridiculously hot out so I wore these things:

Maxi Dress – Old Navy

T-Shirt – American Apparel

Shoes – Urban Outfitters

Bag – Vintage Coach

Camera – Holga

Earrings – Vintage

Necklace – Made by me, right before we left!

See, I am capable of more than just leggings!

First Shoot Part Two

4 Jul

So here is Rebecca in the third look from the shoot we did.  She’s wearing an Alternative Apparel tank top from Tabula Rasa, skirt from H&M, tights from target, jewellery from Hibou Accessories and an Ursa Major tote that I printed myself.

For the last shot we had some fun with a vintage suitcase and my Polaroid camera (that I found at Value Village for $5 with original film still in it!).  Rebecca is wearing an Ursa Major lace tunic, her own bra, acid wash jeggings from Forever 21, and Hibou Accessories earrings.

All in all we had a great time and I can’t wait for the next shoot!  I want to thank Rebecca for being such a freaking babe and helping me out with my first photo shoot ever.  I’d been contemplating taking the Fashion Photography course offered by my school as one of my general education classes and after this I am taking it for sure!

Styling My First Photoshoot

28 Jun

Babe.

Here’s the first batch of photos from my premiere photo shoot.  I styled the looks, took the pictures, made some of the clothes and all of the jewellery myself.  The gorgeous model is my dear friend Rebecca, a talented quadruple threat who can sing, dance, act AND model with the best of them.  I dare you to look at these pictures and not want to shave her head and make a wig of her hair for  yourself.

For the first look above I put her in a colourful vintage shirt dress (that I let her keep for being such a babe in it), some simple footless tights, a vintage Hibou Accessories bag and belt, and Hibou Accessories earrings.  In typical first time – have to figure it all out – mindspace, I completely forgot about shoes!  She wore her own but trust me friends, I won’t be making that oversight again. Towering heels for all next time!

For Rebecca’s second look, I was thinking about festival fashion (Glastonbury anyone? I’ll give her wellies next time).  She’s in a sun hat from Drysdale & Co, vintage crochet fringe vest and floral maxi skirt, simple black tee from Old Navy and accessories by Hibou Accessories.  Two more looks to come.

I welcome any feedback on my shots as well!
